Selecting Appropriate  Governance

Key considerations when determining which “technological” approach to use for the Change Management Governance of a specific Decision Service. Not an all-inclusive list of characteristics, meant to provide a general comparison.

 
 
 
 

Decision Governance Framework

  • Formal “sign-off” or review is required at regular intervals.
  • Rule Authors would benefit from Automation.
  • Tier 2 or Tier 3 Releases are Longer in duration.
  • Solution is not extremely volatile.
 
 
 
 

Branch Based

  • This is the First Release of the Solution (initial Development).
  • Rule Authors are also the ODM Developers.
  • Tier 1 or Tier 2 Releases will happen in quick succession.
  • Solution is extremely volatile.
 
 
 
 

Tiers

There are 3 different Tiers of Release Management and Versioning. Each is meant to meet a distinct set of needs and provides a different level of flexibility, control, and “safety”.

 
 

Tier 1 – Interim Release

A Tier 1 Release is meant for immediate, emergency, ad hoc, and or exception change management and deployment.

Characteristics

  • Only single Tier 1 Release In-Progress
  • Intended for Quick/Bugfix Changes
  • Can occur within hours with minimal testing.
  • Limited to a single Change Activity
  • Validation Activities NOT required.

Allowable Activities Include

  • Rule Additions/Deletions/Edits
  • Domain Additions
 
 
 

Tier 2 – Standard Release

A Tier 2 Release is meant for “normal” change management and deployment.

Characteristics

  • Up to two Tier 2 or 3 Releases In-Progress
  • Intended for normal operation
  • 2-6 week duration

Allowable Activities-Everything EXCEPT

  • XOM Changes
  • Structural Changes
 

Tier 3 – Major Release

A Tier 3 Release is meant for more significant changes to the solution, particularly model and structural changes.

Characteristics

  • Up to two Tier 2 or 3 Releases In-Progress
  • Intended for Enhancements
  • Duration depends on scope

Allowable Activities Include

  • Anything
